5. The leaf toss

The one picture where nobody has to hold still. Throw, laugh, catch the middle of it. It is the fall photo of siblings most people are actually trying to take.

6. The apple orchard

Rows of trees make leading lines, a wooden crate makes somewhere to sit, and apples give small hands something to do.

What makes a fall family photo work

Coordinate, don't match. Rust, cream, olive and denim together read as a family; four identical plaid shirts read as a uniform.
Give everybody something to do. Holding a pumpkin, walking, throwing leaves. Stood still, children stiffen and adults smile with their mouths only.
Shoot the light, not the clock. The last hour before sunset is when fall colour glows. Midday flattens it.
Get down to the smallest person's height. A family photographed from an adult's eye level is a picture of the tops of children's heads.

When the outing is the problem
